It was a tournament of two halves for our Cub Group football team at this years Mid-Cornwall District Football Tournament
Despite all the recent April rains the Saturday morning was dry as our football players descended to Nanphyssick football ground for the annual tournament. The six a-side games would see 9 teams from across the district compete in a round robin league event with each game lasting 10 minutes (5 minutes each way).
St Stephens kicked off the tournament against one of the favourites, Polkerris. Needless to say the favourites didn’t let themselves down with a quality display which ended in a 7-1 defeat, our highlight a quality long range goal from Toby.
For many of our young cubs this was their first ever football tournament of any kind and it was clear from the first game that they needed some re-arrangement and shuffling around of positions. So our leaders got to work and we trialed our new formation in the next round with much greater success, still a defeat going down 2-0 but a much more solid display none the less.
The morning proceeded with 2 more games but growing confidence, including a narrow defeat to other tournament favourites Gorran where we all felt St Stephens deserved a draw at least and finally a draw 1-1 that seemed to kick start our team into a new gear!
The afternoon saw a different team, with 2 wins including an impressive 3-1 display and a further 2-2 draw which brought us to the final game of the afternoon, a showdown with Sticker. St Stephens needed a win to progress to the semi-finals a task that seemed impossible at the start of the day, and Sticker just needed a draw to go through. What a tight game it was, if I’m honest (although bias) St Stephens were the better team with some good attempts and a penalty from Zac which was expertly saved from the Sticker keeper. The game however finished a tight 0-0 and our tournament was over.
In summary it was a great day that all the boys who took part enjoyed. Each played their part in some exciting matches and for many of them their first experience of a large cub event. Well done St Stephens, next year we will go even further!
